With a large non-resident population regularly visiting Big Sky, evacuations are a large concern. While evacuations are frequently not the right solution for many incidents, when they are needed, a methodical and orderly implementation is key to their success. This is complicated in Big Sky by the large non-resident population, large commuting work force and the limited travel corridors accessing Big Sky.
Emergency Officials have implemented a framework with primary travel routes and identified areas of refuge.
Overview
It is important to keep in mind that incidents involving evacuations are often very dynamic based on a variety of constantly changing factors. Ensuring you receive, and follow, emergency directions while in Big Sky is critical.
Step 1: Receiving Notifications
Mass notifications in Big Sky are provided by the Gallatin County Community Notification System powered by Everbridge. To receive messages while in Big Sky, text “BIGSKY” to 888777. This will opt you in for emergency notifications via text messages during your visit. You will automatically be removed from the list within a month.
You can also download the Everbridge Public Safety app for your smart device. You will need to create an account, but if you visit the area frequently it is a better route and will provide emergency information for all areas of Gallatin County.
Step 2: Understanding Evacuations
The Big Sky area utilizes the recommended Montana Evacuation Model with a Warning followed by direction to Evacuate or Shelter in Place.
Warning—A situation exists that you should be aware of and monitor closely which may directly affect you.
If the situation is not resolved, one of the following directives may be issued
Evacuation—The situation is not safe for you to remain in the area. You should leave immediately.
Shelter in Place—An unsafe situation exists, but it is safer to remain where you are and not go outside.
Step 3: Develop Family Emergency Plan
Residents and visitors should both develop a plan for if they are affected by an incident in Big Sky.
- Identify which critical personal items you must take with you during an evacuation.
- Do you have a enough supply of critical items on hand if you can’t go to the store for several days.
- Orient yourselves to the roads in your neighborhood and the major roads around you that may serve as Egress Routes.
- Orient yourselves to potential Areas of Refuge around Big Sky that you could be directed towards.
