Bacon Rind Fire Burns in Gallatin Canyon in the Lee Metcalf Wilderness

The lightening sparked Bacon Rind Fire is burning on the Custer Gallatin National Forest in the Lee Metcalf Wilderness about two mile west of Highway 191 between Bacon Rind and Snowslide Creeks near the boundary of Yellowstone National Park.  The fire is estimated at about five acres in size and is burning in timber and grass.  The fire is located about 20 miles south of Big Sky, Montana and is currently not threatening any structures.

Two firefighters are staffing the fire and modeling efforts to determine growth potential are being completed.  The results of the on the ground reconnaissance and the data modeling will help inform how the fire will be managed. Managers are coordinating closely with Yellowstone National Park given the proximity of the fire to the park boundary.

Smoke from the fire may be visible from Highway 191.  If you do see smoke from the Bacon Rind Fire please remember to stay focused on driving until you can find a safe place to pull over.
